About Us

The Pikuach inspection service came into being in 1996 at the initiative of Laurie Rosenberg, then Education Officer at the Board of Deputies of British Jews. Pikuach was the response of the Anglo-Jewish community to the government requirement that schools have their denominational religious education provision inspected by teams of inspectors using a common framework for the inspection of standards drawn up by Ofsted (UK Education acts 1992, 1996).

Pikuach is funded by the Board of Deputies of British Jews.

The service is run on a part time basis by a Director based at the Board of Deputies office who is in turn supported by an educational consultant and a part time administrator. An Advisory Board comprising professional staff from the Board of Deputies, as well as Pikuach inspectors and headteachers, monitors and advises the on-going organisation and running of Pikuach.

Since its inception, Pikuach has successfully completed 150 school inspections. There are currently 49 Jewish state aided schools including Free, Academy and Voluntary Aided schools; Pikuach is servicing the majority of these which straddle the breadth of the religious spectrum. 17 new schools have opened up or become voluntary aided since Pikuach started, therefore requiring inspection.

Pikuach is the only inspection service that is accredited by the Department for Education (DfE) to undertake inspections at Jewish schools, and as a result Pikuach enjoys a good working relationship and contacts with both the Department for Education and Ofsted.

Pikuach currently has 27 inspectors all of whom have held or currently hold senior positions in the Anglo-Jewish day school system.
